Our Take

Roughly 25 years after the duo’s legendary first releases, the UR-101 & UR-102, Martin Frei and Felix Baumgartner have returned to Urwerk’s roots with the the launch of the UR-102 “Reloaded.” The reinterpreted UR-102 “Reloaded” comes in two versions, titanium and Urwerk-signature black.

Compared to the Urwerk’s origins, this watch has picked up many of the design and aesthetic evolutions of the brand over the last two decades. The wandering hour complication showcases an updated track with the addition of a minutes indicator as well as the commemorative text, indicating the distance Urwerk has traveled around the sun since the launch of the original UR-101 and UR-102 at Baselworld 1997. We can also see that Martin and Felix’s interests in interactivity have impacted the crown on the reloaded version – it has merged with the case at 4 o’clock to create a more streamlined aesthetic compared to the original. An updated, slightly larger size as well, the UR-102 “Reloaded” features a 41mm case.

With careful observation, we can see some subtle nods to the originals here. The original UR-102 came with an intensely bright blue, anodized aluminum case. In the late 1990’s, that color combined with the avant-garde design created quite some noise from the early, very small community of indie collectors. A call-back to that loud and courageous timepiece, the UR-102 “Reloaded” in titanium brings that same blue back to the minute track.

A return to the past as a way to the future, the UR-102 is an edition of two hundred pieces, with one hundred in all black and one hundred in natural grey titanium. The first twenty five pieces will be delivered as a set of two.
