Our Take

Last year, we had the pleasure of handling a MB&F Legacy Machine Perpetual (LMP). For us, it’s one of the most immaculate timepieces in modern independent watchmaking. We really didn’t think the brand would be able to top that with another perpetual. Yet the LMP EVO is a contender, and a truly spectacular timepiece.

Compared to the release of the original LMP in 2015, the EVO edition has some notable upgrades. And more “traditional” aesthetics (with an MB&F twist) has been swapped out for a much more sporty feel. Nothing represents this shift toward sporty in the EVO more than the new “FlexRing” shock absorption system, screw-down crown, and water resistance to 80m. The EVO is one of the only perpetual calendars that can take a beating and be worn as a “daily” for the most active collectors.

While the perpetual movement is still powered by the genius of Stephen McDonnell (we cover this here), the case has changed to accommodate a sporty version of the LMP. The EVO rocks a zirconium case – a material lighter than the steel, yet more durable than titanium. It’s the perfect design decision for the sporty intention of this timepiece, and also gives the EVO’s case an usual position in the history of MB&F’s creations. Like all MB&F timepieces, the EVO clearly posed a challenge – how does one turn the LMP into a sports watch – and that’s why we love the brand and the EVO. Exceptionally rare, there are only 45 total EVO timepieces with 15 in each color. This recently delivered EVO with black dial is already beloved by its new owner, and we can’t wait to get our hands on another as soon as possible.
