Nestled in the watchmaking town of Glashütte, Moritz Grossmann has established itself as a true independent among its neighbours – from A. Lange & Söhne to Nomos Glashütte to Glashütte Original. One of the watches that has consistently drawn attention from collectors is the HAMATIC – a modern revival of the historical pendulum-style rotor used in early automatic timepieces. For the 200th birthday of the brand’s founder, the manufactory now presents the HAMATIC Silver-Plated by Friction anniversary edition.
What makes this watch so compelling is how the movement, caliber 106.0, feels both historical and modern at the same time. It reaches back to the earliest days of automatic watchmaking – the era of Abraham-Louis Breguet – while delivering a level of architecture and finishing that goes far beyond anything from that period. Miniaturizing a hammer-winding system into a modern wristwatch remains one of the most fascinating achievements of the calibre 106.0.
The namesake of the timepiece, the surface is silver-plated entirely by hand using a rare friction technique that creates a soft, finely textured finish. This historical technique works by hand-brushing the dial with various various powders, resulting in a fine-grained, velvet-like texture. Blue numerals and scales provide contrast, and for the first time on a HAMATIC model, Arabic numerals replace the Roman ones. It feels lighter, more classical, and closer in spirit to the watches of the 19th century. This anniversary model leans further into heritage by featuring an “1826” engraving on the balance cock and a vintage “M. GROSSMANN” logo on the dial.
Limited to just 18 pieces in white gold, the HAMATIC Silver-Plated by Friction is a thoughtful tribute to the founder – a watch that reflects both the historical roots of Moritz Grossmann and the quiet confidence of a modern independent brand.
