Chopard LUC Quattro Mark IV Platinum Ice Blue

Chopard’s L.U.C. collection represents the high-end of the brand’s watchmaking capabilities. These are timepieces with in-house movements, high levels of complexity, fine finishing and all are produced in the brand’s workshops in Geneva and Fleurier. Each timepiece with the L.U.C. stamp on the dial signifies a mastery of everything that goes into the craft. Here, we have the pleasure of presenting the L.U.C. Quattro Mark IV in platinum case and ice blue dial.

The fourth generation of the Quattro, the original was released at the turn of the century in 2000. To commemorate the silver jubilee, this timepiece features some subtle upgrades, a new case and design decisions to make this version even more aesthetically pleasing for collectors. One example of the small things that change a watch is the power reserve indicator. Historically on Quattro timepieces, it was always at 12 o’clock. Here, it has been moved onto the movement. This declutters the dial, presenting a more streamlined “time-only” appearance. Rather than present visual variety through indications, L.U.C. has leaned into texture, offering a frosted surface for the ice blue dial. Applied herringbone-style indices and dauphine hands, it’s an overall beautiful dial to compliment the revised, more sleek 39mm x 10.4mm case. 

Turning the timepiece over, we see the watchmaking capabilities of L.U.C. on full display. Named the “Quattro” for its four mainspring barrels, this timepiece packs a massive 9-day power reserve. While twin barrels are fairly common in watchmaking, four is very extraordinary. On top of that, the movement construction here with Caliber L.U.C 98.09-L is noteworthy. Two mainspring barrels are stacked on top of each other, creating a “series arrangement,” where each barrel unwinds over roughly two days before the next one takes over. COSC certified for chronometric performance, the division of distributed power across four barrels does nothing to sacrifice timekeeping precision. With a large plate covering the massive barrels, the architecture of the movement is relatively simple. What it lacks in complexity, it makes up in superlative finishing. Côte de Genève striping on full display across the movement, there are polished countersinks for screws, polished screw tops, abundant interior angles, entirely black polished regulator. On top of all of this, the Quattro Mark IV bears the Geneva Seal (Poinçon de Genève in French) – a high accolade in watchmaking, signifying that the movement was manufactured and finished in the Canton of Geneva.
