C by Romain Gauthier Titanium Edition Four

$49,000

Romain Gauthier is one of the more technically innovative and unusual indie watchmakers in the industry. The Logical One, one of Gauthier’s more popular creations and the timepiece that cemented his presence in the industry, is a heavy-hitter and winner of the 2013 GPHG Award for Men’s Complication. We’re fortunate to present another, more recent creation – this is the C by Romain Gauthier Titanium Edition Four.

The sportiest and most minimalist timepiece from Romain Gauthier, the C (originally named The Continuum) was released in 2021. Modern and youthful, this is a contemporary watch that oozes luxury and craftsmanship. Though a “simple” timepiece, time-only, the C’s engineering and finishing across the movement, case, and dial is sublime. From the front, the crown at 2 o’clock features a blue rubber ring, allowing for easier grip on the crown as well as adding an obvious sportiness to the design. The tapering blue lines on the small seconds, aesthetically bring together the use of blue, all on the black Grade 5 titanium dial plate. With lumed hour markers as well as hands, the C is fully committed to being a sports watch.

As one would expect from Gauthier, the movement is stunning. In-house, manual wind, it boasts decoration throughout at top quality. The movement’s construction is modern, using plates and finger-like bridges. At quick glance, one would struggle to imagine that such an ornately decorated and elaborately designed caliber powers a three-hand timepiece. Outside of the design and decoration, Gauthier could not resist injecting a bit of his signature engineering spirit. The movement features an unusual stop-seconds mechanism. Rather than using a straight or L-shaped balance stop lever to stop the movement of the balance wheel, Gauthier has opted to employ a snail cam that performs a double function: it touches and stops the balance wheel when the crown is pulled out and, when the crown is pushed back in, the snail cam makes a turn and gives the balance an impulse to help it start beating again.

Specific to this edition, the 41mm by 9.55mm case features satin-finished and polished Grade 5 titanium with black ADLC coating. Naturally, the pin buckle matches. The total weight of this timepiece, everything included, comes out to a mere 55g. Extremely light, it’s hard to even notice when worn on the wrist and resilient to everyday wear and tear with a 50m water resistance. Limited to 38 timepieces, this is a timepiece for collectors who want an ultra-fine timepiece that exudes a summertime mood.
