Arnold & Sons’ sports timepiece, the Longitude, returns with an all-new model – the 5°W Edition in titanium. Inspired by the aesthetics of John Arnold’s maritime chronometers, used to calculate longitude accurately in the early days of precise seafaring, the 5°W’ Edition’s case features a red gold bezel ring and is limited to 38 pieces.
This last stretch of land at the southern tip of Great Britain – nautical coordinates 49° 57’ 32’’ north by 5° 12’ 23’’ west – is not just the gateway to the trade winds of the southern seas, but also a place historically feared by sailors. This spot on the map points towards the Isles of Scilly, where an English fleet was wrecked due to a lack of precise navigational instruments on 22 October 1707. To avoid a repeat of this tragedy, the British admiralty offered a prize of £20,000 to the first person to solve the challenging problem of calculating longitude at sea in 1714. As a homage to the iconic Lizard Point, located in the region where John Arnold was born, the metallic grey color of the dial represents the waters at the 49th parallel. This hue of ocean in the North Atlantic is common during the fall, especially during stormy periods, where the water and clouds meet at the horizon in matching colors.
At the heart of Longitude Titanium beats the new A&S6302 caliber, certified by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC). It is wound by an oscillating weight with a design influenced by sailing. Its shape is reminiscent of the prow of an 18th-century English frigate cleaving through the water, and it is carved from a single block of 22-carat gold. The outer rim of the rotor is engraved with graduations similar to those on a sextant – another maritime element.
The caliber is lavished with the same high standard of finishes commonly seen at Arnold & Son, such as chamfered bridges with the house’s specialty ‘Rayons de la Gloire’ motif. Like all its movements, the A&S6302 was entirely developed, produced, decorated, assembled, adjusted, and cased up at the Manufacture in La Chaux-de-Fonds. This caliber features a large barrel and an oscillation frequency of 4 Hz, providing a 60-hour power reserve.
Coming with an interchangeable, anthracite grey alligator leather strap, this is a nicely priced, sport-chic timepiece with a high-level finish.
