The new HM Pietersite from Arnold & Son is a study in restraint, atmosphere, and material storytelling. At its core lies a dial crafted from pietersite, a rare mineral often referred to as the “stone of storms.” With its swirling, unpredictable patterns, the stone evokes turbulent skies and crashing waves, an intentional nod to Cornwall, the birthplace of the brand’s namesake, John Arnold. The result is a dial that feels alive, capturing a fleeting moment of natural drama in solid form.
This poetic surface is housed in a refined 39.5 mm case with this version in stainless steel. At just 7.82 mm in thickness, the HM lives firmly in ultra-thin territory, emphasizing elegance and wearability. Its design is deliberately pared back, displaying only hours and minutes. This is where the “HM” designation is derived. The name also subtly references British naval tradition, echoing the “His/Her Majesty’s Ship” prefix and reinforcing the model’s maritime heritage.
Turning the watch over reveals the manually wound calibre A&S1001, an in-house movement that is just 2.7 mm thick. Despite its slim profile, it delivers an impressive 90-hour power reserve and operates at a frequency of 3 Hz. The finishing is in line with high horology expectations: a rhodium-plated, circular-grained mainplate, bridges adorned with radiating Cotes de Geneve, and meticulously finished screws and wheels.
Limited to 18 in stainless steel, the HM Pietersite is an expressive, stone-dial timepiece. Paired with a matte blue alligator strap that mirrors the tones of the dial, it is a watch that balances technical refinement with emotional resonance.
